Planning

Our programs have been growing and we are excited about the form Recycle-A-Bike has been able to take due to it’s committed volunteers like you! We are working on a formal report to let you all know what RAB volunteers and committee coordinators have been working on. Recycle-A-Bike seeks to improve quality of life in Providence through advocating for biking as a main source of transportation. Recycle-A-Bike sees education, especially that which engages young people, as the optimal way to making creative, sustainable change.

Any amount of funding really helps our programatic progress:

After School Programs: Students learn bike mechanics and then earn the bike they worked on. Currently we have two programs running twice a week. One at an elementary school in Central Falls, and another at the Providence Presbyterian church! We host our after school program off site because of our limited space here at the Yard as well as the lack of heat. We hope to expand and have a heated space on site by next year.

Open Shop is our most popular program. Consistent participants include community members of various life experiences and skill sets, multiple parent and child teams, and high school students working on their senior projects supervised by RAB mechanics.  We can always use the support by any level of bike mechanic, people who speak multiple languages, and those who can work with others, and have a positive attitude.

Wrenching-Wednesdays This is our Intro-to-Bike-Maintenance class. One of our lead mechanics will give you the skills to better understand your bike and the great world of wrenching. You can than hone your skills in our Open Shop working with others on various issues.

All programs require adequate preparation time, for finding funding, organizing teachers, students, bikes and all the parts, organization of the shop, and following up. Supporting our key members with stipends and salaries enable us to provide quality services. Providing support for a new insulated, heated space will allow our programs to engage and encourage year round bike riding and support.
